How to Prepare for a
Fill Dirt Delivery

A little prep saves you time and money. Call 510-860-4639 to schedule.

A little preparation before your fill dirt delivery makes the whole process faster and protects your property. Here's exactly what to do so the day goes smoothly.

1. Pick and Clear Your Drop Zone

Choose a flat, accessible area close to where you'll use the fill. Keep it away from structures, sprinkler heads, and septic systems โ€” a dump truck unloading near a septic riser can cause serious damage. If the truck must drive over a driveway or paved surface, put down a heavy tarp or plywood sheets to protect it from load impact.

Clear any obstacles: garden furniture, hoses, low-hanging branches that a truck cab would hit, and anything you don't want covered in dust.

2. Check Truck Access

A typical dump truck needs:

  • Gate or driveway width of at least 10โ€“12 feet
  • Overhead clearance of 14+ feet (wires, branches, garage door frames)
  • Firm ground โ€” soft or wet ground can get a heavy truck stuck
  • No HOA or city permit requirements blocking the street or driveway

If access is tight, let us know when you call. We can sometimes adjust how close the truck gets or split delivery across multiple smaller drops.

3. Confirm Your Yardage

Use our fill dirt calculator or call with your dimensions. Remember: fill compacts when spread and tamped, so ordering 10โ€“15% more than your raw calculation is smart. Getting a second delivery later costs more in scheduling time than rounding up now.

4. Be There or Leave Clear Instructions

Ideally, be present when the truck arrives โ€” you can direct exactly where the load goes. If you can't be there, mark the drop zone clearly (stakes, flagging tape, or a tarp on the ground) and leave written instructions with a trusted person on site. Our drivers won't guess; if the drop spot isn't clear, they'll need to call you.

5. Have a Plan to Move It

A 7-yard load is roughly the size of a small car โ€” it's a significant pile. Before delivery, confirm you have the tools to spread it: wheelbarrow, shovel, skid-steer, or a landscaping crew ready. Also check the weather โ€” if rain is coming in 24 hours, fill that isn't spread and compacted can turn into a slippery, eroding mess.

6. After Delivery: Spreading and Compacting

Work in lifts โ€” spread and compact in 6โ€“8 inch layers rather than dumping everything at once and trying to compact it all. Each lift should be:

  1. Spread evenly to the target depth
  2. Lightly watered (moisture helps compaction)
  3. Compacted with a plate compactor, hand tamper, or roller
  4. Allowed to settle before the next lift

For large fills like pool holes, expect some settling over the first rainy season even with good compaction. Plan your final grade slightly high to account for this.
